Sam Smoothy

About Sam

Born on the mountains of southern New Zealand, trained in the mountains of Europe and hardened by international competition Sam Smoothy is on the rise.

In the 2010 Freeride World Qualifer Series, Sam lead out early with a 2nd in NZ and winning the prestigious Engadin Snow in Europe, only to break his leg in Austria the week after. Despite being only the start of competition season in Europe Smoothy had done enough to qualify for the 2011 Freeride World Tour.

After a great season in NZ taking 2nd in the World Heli Challenge and filming a section with the legendary Warren Miller Entertainment crew Smoothy was on hot form returning to Europe. But injuring his knee days from the 1st FWT competition he was forced to limp through the Chamonix leg and withdraw from the Engadin stop, the competition he won in the previous year as a FWQ event. Crashing in the final at Kirkwood he still placed 6th and backed that up with a 5th in Austria. Missing the cut for the Finals in Verbier by one in an injury plagued season was tough but his results since show just how committed this kiwi man is.

Returning to Europe in 2012 sam broke through in ferocious form storming the podium in three out of the first four events and taking hold of the fwt lead.  his no holds barred high speed skiing had thrust him into the lead but in conjunction with clipping a rock this hyper aggressive style would see him take a huge crash in the final event, flipping head over heels down the infamous bec de rosses and slipping to 4th in the rankings. walking the crash off was no issue for the strong kiwi and neither will be getting over the disappointment of missing the fwt title. He will be back for the 2013 tour and its guaranteed to be one hell of a show.
